The L Word - 5×12 Loyal and true

I admit it. I was scared to watch this last episode. Scared to see how Ilene decided to end the season. I have to say that I personally liked this season a lot, yes I have enjoyed myself. I have heard mixed messaged about these past twelve episodes. I have no real idea of what people think of this season in general. Maybe I should create a poll and ask people for their opinion. Could be an interesting thing to do.
Spoiler warning!
That first scene where they suggest that the movie needs to change the ending sucks. I mean that is what happens when you make it a mainstream movie again. There is nothing wrong with being gay. At least in the year 2008 there shouldn’t be. I am glad that there is a channel like ‘Showtime’ who aren’t bad to give us shows like ‘Queer as Folk’ and ‘The L Word’. Though I would not necesarilly use them as role models I do want to say that it is good to see on screen what we feel inside.
Tina Kennard and Bette Porter
The car scene is cute, Angie in the background and Bette being all insecure about where Tina and she stand in the relationship. I was really surprised by Bette’s question later on in the episode where she asks Tina if Angie should get a baby brother or sister. I mean they are at the point of rekindling and she is ready to drop straight in, head first. It is always the same with Bette it is either everything or nothing at all. There is nothing in between, not with her.
For once Tina is the one to pick up the pieces after Bette has fallen apart at the unveiling of Jodi’s latest work of art. Bette could have seen that one coming, she hurt Jodi deeply.
That dance scene is totally cute! Oh my God, they look so good together. Funny to see their alter ego’s Bev and Nina watching them as they dance together. They are in the unique position to see where their characters end up.
Helena Peabody
Oh my God! Let me have my fan girlish squeal here please! AAAAHHHHH Helena!!!! Okay thank you. I have to say that I already squealed when I noticed Holland Taylor’s name with the guest stars. I love that woman, I think that her recurring guest role along with Lara are my favorite. So I was already loving the episode when I saw her name, when that woman is around trouble follows close enough.
And surely Mama Peabody had hardly entered the screen before her jailbird daughter followed. It was so lovely to hear that British accent. I missed that in the show I really did and hearing it totally unexpected is so much better then knowing beforehand. Yes it is true I stayed completely spoiler free during the whole season I had no idea that she was coming back. I really hope that she will be back next year, she belongs with that cast and in my opinion she should be there for the ending.
Gotta love the fact that they are bringing Peggy Peabody into the hospital by a helicopter because she might be dying after being stung by a jelly fish and the first thing she complains about when she sees her daughter are her clothes. Now I know that Helena didn’t look the way that she did a while ago, when all she cared about was designer bags, designer boots, big bungalows with a sea view and money.
The fact that Peggy Peabody told Helena to use her money to help Kit out and Helena who reacted by saying that her mother had told her previously to not try and buy friendship made me laugh. It was funny, that is what happened before and the way that she said so easily buy your friend a nightclub, buy her two.
The fact that she got back at Dawn Denbo through ‘her lover Cindi’ that is a classic. It was the best moment when Helena got into Denbo’s face and told her ‘She’s with me!’. I loved it! That bitch needed to be put back in her place a long time ago and it was awesome that she came back to do that.
Finally Cindi dared to stand up against Dawn, what a screwed up relationship they have. And Helena kicked ass ‘Rich bitch Helena style’. Awesome!
Shane McKutcheon
Shane who wants to go to school … what did she have all the women on her block and is she now going to devour every girl at the campus?
Alice Pieszecki
Alice, Alice, Alice what where you thinking? You really wonder how many times she needs to see bad examples of broken relationships around her. Alice is right by what she says to Shane, that no one works for their relationships anymore. That a lot of people move on without even trying.
At the same time Shane is right too, Alice deserves happiness and if she can’t find that with Tasha then it is her right to move on. But I remember also that just last week they where looking for a place together.
Tasha Williams
So you are in the army, you quite for whatever reason and you decide to go into the security business. Now I can see where that seems to be a good choice. But someone who has done 1 or 2 tours and who is on edge and ready to go at minutes notice, could never honestly be a security guard. In my honest opinion that is, when I saw her pull on that uniform it didn’t surprise me at all. But unless something happens during your shift, like a break in or whatever it seems to be the lamest job in the world.
I can’t imagine someone with Tasha’s knowledge and resume to work that job and to be content with it on the other hand I can understand that a company would want to hire someone with her knowledge and resume. Tasha signing up for the Police Academy ( okay that makes me think of those crazy movies back in the eighties and early nineties ) sounds more like her thing. It fits her better, I could really see her work as a cop.
Jodi Lerner
Well Bette could have been able to see that train wreck coming from a mile away. Of course Jodi was hurt, humiliated and devastated. She just wanted to make Bette feel the way that she does. Sure Bette might feel fucked up over what happened. But at the same time Bette is rekindling with Tina, getting her family back together. Something that she wanted all along.
Stupid Bette, I mean did she really think that she could just walk in there and act as if nothing happened between her and Jodi. As if nothing changed.
Adele Channing
Adele is showing her true colors finally.
Kit Porter
“You can go home or you could stay you could do the dishes … the floor, we got a lot of glasses to pick up.”
That was Kit’s best one liner this episode. Again she had a pretty passive role throughout the whole episode, she was there but she would not really be a miss if she wasn’t there.
Phyllis Kroll
The relationship between Phyllis and Molly is one of interest. Of course someone like Phyllis doesn’t like someone like Shane for their daughter especially not when test scores, being the top 2 percent and scholarships are the most important thing.
Phyllis was the one who had a flirt kind of thing with Alice, that was weird. And now that Shane is dating with Molly she is telling her to stay away from Molly. At the same time so far Shane has been the one who defended Phyllis in front of her daughter.
Max Sweeney
Max just like Kit did not really seem to have a function this season. Nothing particularly interesting has happened to him. It is a shame, it could be such and interesting character, that they could explore a lot of different
Jenny Shecter
I might not like Jenny but these last two episodes where brutal on her. I mean she get fired from the movie, screwed over by her girlfriend. Her assistant takes her job ( and does a better job at it ) and her best friend decides that it is okay to fuck her ex girlfriend. That is heartless, especially from someone who you consider to be your best friend.
The future
It makes me wonder, eight more episodes next year? And with the questions that where still unanswered and the situations as they are right now it is kind of fun to speculate.
Will Angie get a baby sister or brother? Maybe … if we jump ahead in time a couple of months like they did the other season we might see if she will. Which calls for a new question, who will be the birth mother this time? It leaves endless possibilities and the questions might be answered next year or they are not. Who will survive the next eight episodes together and which relationships will crash and burn?
And last but not least will the fans be satisfied by what they get? I wonder … I really hope that we won’t get a repeat of season 3. I loved every other season, just season 3 is still a sore spot in each fans eye. And I know from various sources that there are still a lot of people who are not at all happy wit the show and with Ilene Chaiken’s decisions.
